Dall’edizione originale francese del 1936. Quest’opera, scritta tra le due guerre, trova un suo posto nella storia degli studi sulle droghe, in quanto rappresenta l’anello di congiunzione fra il Phantastika di Lewis Lewin e i molteplici scritti degli anni ‘50 e ‘60 dedicati all’argomento. Di particolare rilievo la parte finale del testo, dedicata alla ‘ebbrezza divina’ nelle religioni dei popoli indo-europei, comprese insolite – per l’epoca – ricerche sulle bevande inebrianti dei Celti e dei Germani.

ALESSANDRO TARSIA, 2011, Il pane e il fuoco. L’ergotismo nel meridione d’Italia, Aracne Editrice, Roma, 136 pp. ISBN: 978-88-548-4318-9.

L’autore, nato a Siena nel 1978, laureato in Scienze Filosofiche, collabora con la Cattedra di Storia delle Tradizioni Popolari presso l’Università della Calabria. In questo saggio ha sviluppato uno studio sull’ergotismo ben fatto e che apporta nuovi contributi su questo tema. Se da un lato il capitolo “Ergotismo e paganesimo” può risultare, per i pochi studiosi specialisti del settore, un tantino confuso, il capitolo “Ergotismo e cristianesimo” risulta oltremodo interessante, con un’attenta e in più passi innovativa analisi del rapporto fra Sant’Antonio e il “fuoco sacro” (ergotismo), culminante in un capitoletto magistralmente intuitivo dedicato al grasso suino (lardo), usato dagli antonini come potente farmaco per la cura dell’ergotismo. Importanti sono anche i dati inerenti le formule magiche e apotropaiche dei momenti della semina e della mietitura dei cereali e della preparazione del pane, che l’autore ha individuato nei documenti folclorici dell’Italia meridionale, così come gli inediti passi relativi alle problematiche associate alla consumazione di “pani poveri” fatti con le più disparate spighe selvatiche e altre piante nocive, presenti  nelle carte del ‘700 e dell’800 delle Intendenze e degli Ispettorati della Calabria Citeriore. Interessante anche la saggia disquisizione sulla storia della diffusione della segale e di altri cereali nel Sud Italia e sulla terminologia popolare italiana associata alla segale cornuta.

Viene qui presentato il lavoro di un moderno studioso rumeno, Andrei Oişteanu, con la recensione di un suo libro e la pubblicazione on-line di due suoi articoli, per il cui permesso ringrazio qui l’autore.

Questo libro rappresenta sicuramente una pietra miliare riguardo gli studi sulle droghe in Romania. L’autore, discepolo di Mircea Eliade, studioso di storia delle religioni, antropologo ed etnologo dell’Istituto per la Storia delle Religioni di Bucharest (per una sua biografia si veda qui) ha svolto per decenni approfondite ricerche sull’uso antico e moderno delle droghe nel territorio carpato-danubiano; ricerche che sono culminate in questo libro monumentale, per ora pubblicato in lingua rumena (v’è da sperare in una sua futura edizione inglese).

Nei primi otto capitoli vengono trattati temi inerenti l’uso magico-religioso di diverse droghe. Un capitolo è dedicato alla mandragora (mătrăguna) e focalizza l’attenzione su un documento ottocentesco del folclorista rumeno Simeon Florea Marian che tratta delle credenze rumene su questa pianta (il testo di Marian è riportato per esteso nell’appendice del libro). Oişteanu evidenzia anche uno scritto inedito di Mircea Eliade sulla mandragora, datato agli anni ‘40 del XX secolo (anche questo riportato in appendice al libro), scritto che tuttavia non sembra apportare grosse novità rispetto al magistrale studio fatto dal medesimo Eliade su questa pianta, fatta forse eccezione per una discussione, significativa per quei tempi, sul complesso etimologico dei termini e radici vicino-orientali dûdâ’im, dudon, didit, dd, ecc. con i quali veniva chiamata la mandragora.

Altri capitoli interessanti del libro di Oişteanu riguardano le intossicazioni accidentali con vegetali psicoattivi, con particolare riferimento all’ergot (cornul-secarei), e gli studi rumeni sul famoso e discusso passo di Erodoto che tratta delle presunte fumigazioni degli Sciti con i semi di canapa. E non manca Oişteanu di osservare con dovuta attenzione le altre piante psicoattive solanacee, l’edera, l’assenzio, l’aconito, le papaveracee, così come gli unguenti stregonici e i viatici psicoattivi per l’al di la (prăjitura morţilor).

Altri undici capitoli trattano ampiamente dell’uso delle droghe nell’era moderna e la loro influenza nella letteratura rumena. Una particolare attenzione viene data alle figure di Mircea Eliade e Ioan Petru Culiano, offrendo notizie inedite e sorprendenti circa la vita e l’opera di questi due autori rumeni; notizie che si trovano anche in questi articoli, qui on-line:

It is here presented the work by a modern Romanian scholar, Andrei Oişteanu, with the review of a book and the publication on-line of two articles, for the permission of which I thank here the author.

Andrei Oişteanu, 2011, Narcotice în cultura română. Istorie, religie şi literatură [Narcotics in Romanian culture. History, religion and literature], Polirom, Bucharest, 568 pp.

This book surely represents a milestone concerning the studies on drugs in Romania. The author, disciple of Mircea Eliade, scholar in history of religions, anthropologist and ethnologist of the Institute for the History of Religions of Bucharest (for a biography see here) for many years developed in-depth researches on the old and modern use of drugs in the Carpato-Danubian territory; researches which culminated in this monumental book, so far published in Romanian language (hoping to see in the future an English edition of it).

In the first eight chapters items concerning the magical-religious use of many drugs are considered. One chapter is devoted to the mandrake (mătrăguna), and focalizes the attention to a XIX century document by the Romanian folklorist Simeon Florea Marian dealing with the Romanian believes on this plant (the complete text by Marian is reported in an appendix of the book). Oişteanu put in evidence also an unpublished writing by Mircea Eliade concerning the mandrake, dated back to the years ‘40 of the XX century (this too reported as an appendix of the book); writing which nevertheless does not appears to give more data as regards to the masterly study made by the same Eliade on this plant, beside maybe a discussion, significant for those times, about the etymological complex of the Near-East words and roots dûdâ’im, dudon, didit, dd, etc. with which the mandrake was named.

Other interesting chapters of the Oişteanu book concern the accidental intoxications with psychoactive vegetables, with particular reference to the ergot (cornul-secarei), and the Romanian studies on the famous and discussed passage by Herodotus dealing with the presumed fumigations by the Scythes with the hemp seeds. Oişteanu develops also with due attention studies on the other psychoactive Solanaceous plants, ivy, absinth, wolf’s bane, the papaveraceous plants, and also the witch ointments and the psychoactive viatica to the other world (prăjitura morţilor).

Other eleven chapters are extensively devoted to the use of drugs in the modern times and their influence on the Romanian literature. A particular attention is done to the figures of Mircea Eliade and Ioan Petru Culiano, offering unpublished and surprising data about the life and the work of these two Romanian scholars; data which is possible to find also in these two articles, here on-line:
